How much do composite decks cost to build?

Looking to price a low maintenance patio or deck and willing to give up the organic beauty of hardwood? Then synthetic decking may be right for you!
What does it cost to build a composite deck?
There are a myriad of considerations and choices that go into the pricing of a professional deck design and build – from type of decking material used, to repairs or replacement of existing structures required to securely tie the new deck to your house, to landscaping and permit considerations, etc….. Let’s set up a time for us to talk, visit and evaluate your project site. In order to give you a price estimate, we need to learn what you really want and need and why. In addition to a cost estimate, you will receive an education on the realities and practical considerations involved in deck and patio construction.
What’s the most affordable composite decking material?
The differences in decking surface costs are small compared to the overall project. Many different site factors including sun and rain exposure, distance from grade, aesthetics, local permitting requirements and so much more can impact our custom-tailored recommendation. So you will soon see it’s much more involved than “what’s the most affordable composite decking?” or “what’s the cost per square feet for a patio build?“Many people assume that composite decks are more expensive than wood decks. In fact, there is a large range of prices, depending on the type of decking you choose. Lowest cost composites are comparable to low-cost cedar or redwood. Higher cost composites are comparable to tropical hardwoods and thermally modified hardwoods. The ongoing cost of maintenance for wood decks makes composite decking more cost effective than wood over the long term.
The most popular composite decks that we use have different technologies and manufacturing methods that effect the cost.
Lowest cost – Wood/plastic composites (WPC) are generally (but not always) the least expensive composite choices. The core material is the plastic from your recycle bin added to fine sawdust called “wood powder”. Early composite decks had problems because the wood fiber absorbed moisture and could crumble. Then TimberTech developed capped composites which have a thin layer of hard, UV resistant plastic coating the entire plank. This worked so well that nearly all WPC today is capped.
Middle to high cost – One more expensive option is PVC decking. The best PVC is made by TimberTech due to the acquisition of the Azek company. PVC is Class A fire rated. It can melt but it will never burn. It is cooler under foot than WPC. TimberTech makes a variety of colors and textures with a wide range of prices.
Highest cost – Millboard decking is usually the most expensive but that has not prevented it from being very popular. Millboard is molded and stamped rather than extruded. The planks look so much like wood that most people are fooled when they first see it. If you want a composite deck that looks very realistic, Millboard is a great choice.
